Battery storage

A home battery added to a new or existing PV system, sized to what you would otherwise export.

A battery keeps the solar you would otherwise export and lets you use it in the evening. Whether that pays depends on two numbers: what the export earns, and what the electricity it replaces would have cost you. In Malta those numbers are unusually close.

Without a grant, exported solar earns €0.15 per kWh for 20 years. Enemalta's residential tariff is €0.1047 for the first 2,000 kWh of the year and €0.1298 up to 6,000 kWh, both below the feed-in rate. Only above 6,000 kWh a year (€0.1607, then €0.3420 above 10,000) does a stored kilowatt-hour save more than an exported one earns. We work through this with you before recommending a battery, and the battery tab of the calculator shows it with your own figures.

The 2026 REWS grant paid 75% of a battery's eligible cost, capped at €6,000 per system and €600 per kWh. Its battery options closed on 13 July 2026 and the whole scheme on 12 September 2026; a further round was announced but not detailed.

What this covers

StoreYourSolar: does a battery pay for you?

Our StoreYourSolar guide sets the battery sums out band by band — what each stored kilowatt-hour gains against the €0.15 feed-in tariff it gives up — and the battery calculator runs them on your own consumption and quote.

What it costs

We found no published Maltese battery price per kWh, so we do not show one. The calculator asks you for the price you have been quoted and works out the rest; the survey gives you a real one.

None of these has a published Maltese installed price we can stand behind, so each is quoted after the roof survey, itemised, before anything is ordered.

How it works

You deal with us, not with the installer. We survey the roof, quote a fixed price, bring in a solar installer from the CheckYourTraders-verified network, and stand behind the work. One point of contact, one contract, one invoice.

Questions people ask

Is a battery worth it in Malta?
It depends on your band. Without a grant, export earns €0.15 per kWh, which is more than the first two Enemalta bands cost, so a small household can lose money storing energy it could have sold. Households using more than 6,000 kWh a year, and especially above 10,000, are where a battery starts to make sense.
Can I add a battery to my existing panels?
Usually, though an older system may need a hybrid inverter to manage it. The survey checks what you have.
